History of the Garden House
The Garden House Bed and Breakfast was built in 1895 by the heir to the Hannibal Saw Mill Co. and the Hannibal Sash and Co., Albert Wells Pettibone. The family loved the woodlands and outdoors, and their love for the natural landscape still glows in each room.
In 1905, the house belonged to Charles H. Trowbridge of the Duffy-Trowbridge Stove Manufacturing Co., then the most important industry in town. It later passed to Trowbridge’s son, Charles Albert, who lived in the home in the 1920s. It then was owned by Will Griswold, founder of a furniture store.
The Garden House has sheltered a long list of the early aristocracy, industrious entrepreneurs and the leaders that have helped to make the city of Hannibal, Missouri great. The pictures and artifacts of many of these families can be seen hanging on its walls today, adding even more great character and history to the B&B.

When I find a well-drawn character in fiction or biography I generally take a warm personal interest in him, for the reason that I have known him before--met him on the river Mark Twain
